Artist Statement

I make process-based abstract digital photographs that occupy a space between photography and painting. My work is about the act of translating reality into abstraction. Each series explores a singular process of generating images that begins by taking a photograph with an iPhone camera. The processes involve the successive application of tools and techniques ranging from long exposure photography to text recognition software. I engage in a dialogue with the camera and photographic software, incorporating chance and imperfection. Dadaism’s improvisation and Robert Rauschenberg’s use of quotidian technology influence my practice. I prioritize the action of taking a photograph, the tools I use to take it, and the integrity of the image produced.

Positives Project Statement

Positives is an ongoing series of abstract, long exposure digital color photographs taken with an iPhone. The photographs are about the act of translating reality into abstraction. They are taken outdoors at night using available light. Each exposure lasts for up to nine seconds, during which I vigorously shake the iPhone, creating an abstract composition. I then invert the photograph’s colors, but I leave defects, such as noise and pixelation, alone. The body of work is influenced by automatic drawing, Cy Twombly, and Henri Michaux.
